Symphonium is a 20-piece electro-acoustic ensemble which specializes in classical repertoire. As well, the ensemble performs works from Hollywood soundtracks and Broadway musicals. Symphonium is made up of professional and semi-professional musicians from the Ottawa Valley area who wish to play repertoire not available to them in most of their circles.

Music is specially arranged and composed for the players to allow their musical capabilities to flourish. The flexibility of the instrumentations in the ensemble allows for a wide variety of instruments to substitute for other instruments as necessary. This is a must in small communities. A competent sound engineer is a bonus, as the use of electronics with acoustical instruments requires a check on balance.

The use of synthesizers as apposed to the large string section is economical, but is musically satisfying if the right repertoire is utilized. Not really a chamber orchestra, not really a symphony, and certainly not a concert band, Symphonium is truly unique in its quest for authenticity in its performances. The addition of a cello and a double bass does round out the sound, but one or more of these instruments can be omitted. The use of brass and percussion for punch and volume, is balanced by the winds and “strings”. With this kind of sound, a much wider range of repertoire can be examined.
